Every profession has a God; these are the people who set new definitions of excellence in their field. When it comes to watch making and its complications there is only one person who has set such benchmarks – Giulio Papi, Director Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi (APRP).
Born in Switzerland to Italian parents, Papi since his adolescent days loved mechanics and this love for machines became the driving force to learn watchmaking, after all a watch is a little engine. He started his career with Audemars Piguet in 1984, as he loved their complications. Here, he worked with skeleton watches, but two years later found out that it would take him 20 years to work with complications. Not ready to wait that long he started his own workshop with his partner Dominique Renaud, thus ‘Renaud et Papi’ was born in 1986.
Although he officially works for AP, he has designed complications for many other brands like A. Lange & Söhne, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Ulysse Nardin. Some of the complications Giulio Papi has created for AP are Chronograph, Perpetual Calendar, Grande Complication, Minute Repeater, to name a few. Papi’s talent, passion and dedication to watchmaking are supreme. He is the brains behind the best complications in watches that the world has seen. In 2008 he won the Grand Prix Geneva Watchmaking.
