Watch case making in the \u201860s was a trinary choice: Round, square or rectangular. Cartier, with a heritage of unique geometric expression, refused to conform to the times again. The Santos Tank was shaped by prints of Renault tanks, Baignoire inspired by luxurious bathtubs, and the Chinoise, which is a wearable homage to ancient Chinese temples\u2019 architectural identity. Then, there\u2019s the Crash. Deformed, geometrically distraught, yet time-bendingly captivating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rumour Has It<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cartier is a century-old watchmaking connoisseur of shapes, and the Crash is undoubtedly its most audacious silhouette to date. With all its boldness, the Crash\u2019s genesis in 1967 remains a mystery. It\u2019s rumoured to be inspired by Salvador Dali\u2019s surrealist painting \u201cThe Persistence of Memory\u201d due to its uncanny resemblance to the artwork\u2019s soft, melted pocket watches. However, a major contradiction would be the fact that Dali\u2019s pocket watch depiction featured Arabic numeral indexes, whereas the Crash quintessentially boasts Roman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or\u2026a misshaped Cartier Maxi Oval which was damaged, melted, and reshaped by fire in a real-world automobile accident in London. Every watch enthusiast fantasizes about the Crash\u2019s origin story; however, its truth might be a lot less fantastical.<br>Conceived by legendary designer Rupert Emmerson and Jean-Jacques Cartier in London, the Crash\u2019s iconic shape was a deliberate attempt to capture the avant-garde, nonconformist spirit of London\u2019s Swinging Sixties. Introduced in a progressive 43-millimetre case length, it promised a unique presence on the wrist that traditional Cartier dress watches would never deliver. The case was pinched on both ends and bulged irregularly through its body, forming an off-balance asymmetry that somehow felt complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each Crash was the result of several hours of work by artisans and watchmakers. Being finished and shaped by hand, Cartier didn\u2019t employ any machinery to contour the Crash\u2019s case. Furthermore, each dial was hand-painted, making each Crash a truly unique commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Multi-million-dollar Crash<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May 2022, an original 1967 Cartier London Crash appeared on the online auction platform Loupe This. Crafted in 18-carat yellow gold and preserved in excellent original condition, the first-year example carried an estimated value between $500,000 and $800,000. After 81 bids, the hammer finally fell at $1,503,888. With the platform\u2019s 10 percent buyer\u2019s premium, the final price reached approximately $1.65 million. At the time, no Cartier wristwatch had ever commanded more at auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The record stood for nearly four years. In April 2026, a rare 1987 Cartier London Crash sold at Sotheby&#8217;s Hong Kong for HKD 15.6 million, or approximately $1.99 million (\u20b919.21 crore). Only weeks later, a 1990 Cartier London Crash sold at Christie&#8217;s Geneva for CHF 1,585,000, equivalent to $2,028,800 (\u20b919.59 crore), establishing a new world auction record for the model. Born from the rebellious spirits of 1960s London, its legacy is sustained by genuine intrigue and exclusivity.
