Aviation timepieces are always a favourite with watch enthusiasts and purists. But very few have been put on a pedestal like the IWC Big Pilot’s collection. Originally launched in 1940 under the name of B-Uhr ref. 431 for the warmongering German Air Force and then relaunched again in 2002 as the Big Pilot’s ‘Original’ ref. 5002-01, these IWC watches for men have come a long way. The 2002 original consisted of an automatic Calibre 5011 movement, a 46.2mm case, a date display at 6 o’clock, a power reserve display at 3 o’clock, and the iconic equilateral triangle with two dots flanking from both sides at 12 o’clock. The timepiece adopted a lot of features from the 1940 B-Uhr which could be easily noticed in the dial which was stark black, used Sans Serif numerals, dagger-like hands and an elongated central seconds’ marker. The crown too was enlarged.
The present-day Pilot’s Watches have successfully managed to stay close to the original references, and at the same time have been able to showcase IWC’s spirit of innovation and cutting edge technology in their contemporary times. The collection has retained traditional features such as the large case sizes, central seconds’ marker, dagger-like hands, the triangle mark at 12 o’clock, and Leather straps with rivets and stitches. IWC has also introduced new attributes to the watch collection like the constant force tourbillon, the perpetual/annual calendar, and a power reserve display.
The most popular models among the watch family are:
Big Pilot’s Top Gun Perpetual Calendar
Big Pilot’s Heritage 48/55
