The first in line in the Portugieser family was the ref. 325 which became reality in 1939. The timepiece was a pioneer with its oversized dial, thus pushing the watch industry toward a trend of larger wristwatches. The watch was created with the intent of matching the accuracy of marine chronometers with a large dial for easy reading. It displayed Arabic numerals, a stark white dial, a small seconds display at 6 o’clock, and leaf-like hands. With a pocket watch movement calibre 74 and a 43mm case, the Portugieser was an instrument ahead of its time.
At present, the IWC Portugieser watch family is one of the most recognized and loved watch collections in the world. The timepiece has successfully managed to integrate multiple complications like traditional oversized cases, Arabic numerals, minute repeater, small seconds, chronograph, sapphire crystal glass, an 8-day power reserve, flying tourbillon, moon phase display, and a perpetual/annual calendar into one single unit over the years. The Portugieser collection has advanced models like the Perpetual Calendar and Tourbillon Hand-Wound as well as classic ones such as the Portugieser Automatic and Chronograph. The brand also harbours select timepieces for the very elite like the Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde and the Grande Complication. Today, the Portugieser collection is a mark of IWC’s ingenuity and excellence. The most popular IWC watches for men among the collection are:
• Portugieser Automatic
• Portugieser Chronograph
• Portugieser Perpetual Calendar
• Portugieser Tourbillon Hand-Wound
• Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde
• Portugieser Grande Complication
