When it comes to releasing new watches, Cartier never disappoints. The luxury brand’s mannerisms and antics, when it comes to haut de gamme goods, are simply outstanding, even outlandish. The Maison knows what it is doing and does it to the best of its capabilities. Perhaps, that is what makes it such a great showman. The 2020 Novelties have been rolled out and they are fantastic, to say the least. Cartier has unveiled the list of watches it will be introducing in the markets in 2020 and let’s just say it is a treat for watch connoisseurs.
The new Santos Dumont XL timepiece is a chapter right out of Cartier’s book of genius. The design of the watch has been re-worked upon and the proportions have been re-touched. Cartier really left no stone unturned when it decided to revamp the Santos Dumont. The timepiece, of course, is a stark icon in luxury watchmaking. The watch’s massive history, its connection to pure horological roots, and last but not least, its gem of a mechanical movement, all make it a creation to be celebrated and cherished for generations to come.
Santos Dumont – A Timeless Transformation
The Santos Dumont XL, as the name suggests, with all its taut features, understated elegance, and redesigned case, is an all-new and extra-large version of the timeless classic.
Taking a break from its previous designs, the watch is reinvented into a wider, more generous, and firm structure. Despite the major changes, Cartier has managed to retain core style elements and has kept the primary focus on style. While a lot of elements have been improvised on, the level of sophistication in design and overall finesse are the same. The Santos Dumont XL displays some classic Cartier attributes such as Roman numeral hour markers, the ‘Watchmaker’s 4 o’clock’, sword-shaped blue steel hands, the sapphire cabochon winding crown, the satin-finished sunray dial, and an opaque case-back with the initials of Alberto Santos Dumont on it. As someone once said, the Devil truly is in the details.
The Heart Of The Santos Dumont XL
It is a tough choice, really. How exactly does one choose a movement that is fit for such an iconic watch? Well, Cartier horologists chose the 430 MC mechanical movement for the job. The mechanism is manually wound and is admired for its fine touch and elegance. It offers a power reserve of 38 hours and operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, also denoted as 3 Hertz. Perhaps in the battle between function and form, the true winner is the art of watchmaking.
