Omega and Swatch collaborated for the first time to create a playful interpretation of one of the most popular chronograph ever designed, the Speedmaster Moonwatch.
Swatch salutes one of the most iconic watches of the Swiss watch industry by launching 11 new models of bioceramic MoonSwatch collection.
What is the MoonSwatch?
Swatch has collaborated with Omega watches to create an innovative Swatch version of the iconic Speedmaster Moonwatch.
This unexpected as well as visionary partnership, which happens to be a first between Swatch and Omega, is the result of the trend of collaborations between luxury and fashion brands that has been making rounds. The idea is to create innovative new watches that blend the best qualities of both the worlds.
The brands have taken their inspiration regarding design from space, to create a collection of eleven Swatch models named after planetary bodies, from the giant star at the centre of the solar system to the dwarf planet at its periphery.
All of the Swatch designs are in the brand’s patented BIOCERAMIC, a unique mix of two-thirds ceramic and one-third material derived from castor oil. Although colors like pink and pale blue offer strong clues that these are not your standard Omega Speedmaster watches, a hard-core Moonwatch fan would be hard-pushed to find the difference in the overall look. The key Moonwatch design features are all there. The asymmetrical case, the famous tachymeter scale with dot over ninety and the distinctive Speedmaster subdials, which all work perfectly.
Omega’s Moonwatch is legendary and a must-have for collectors. Swatch’s witty BIOCERAMIC MoonSwatch collection makes the iconic design accessible to fans everywhere. It’s a down to earth take on the watch that went to the moon, which is a perfect representation of Swatch’s joy of life and innovation philosophy.
The new collection comes in rarely seen colors. Each MoonSwatch feature its own mission statement, inspirational engravings and joint OMEGA X SWATCH logos on the dial and crown. The battery cover on each watch features a depiction of its planet.
Why is it Important?
The collection marks the first time Swatch Group’s luxury Omega brand collaborated with its entry-level Swatch counterpart, and at a price point of $260 USD, buyers can purchase the entire 11-watch collection for much less than the original Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch.
While Swatch has made clear that the MoonSwatch is not a limited edition release, thousands have flocked to their nearest Swatch store with arrests reported in Geneva and a store closure in central London due to the chaotic scenes unfolding outside. According to a video interview from Hodinkee, a buyer revealed he traveled from Las Vegas to LA and waited outside for more than 22 hours to secure the watch which is currently selling for more than 10 times the original value on eBay and other secondary markets.
The New Swatch x Omega MoonSwatch
The Omega x Swatch Speedmaster collection consists of 11 pieces referencing different planets and celestial bodies within our solar system including the Moon, Earth, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto, Venus, Uranus, Neptune, and Mercury. The quartz MoonSwatch chronograph references the mechanical Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch inspired by NASA’s Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.
What is Bioceramic?
BIOCERAMIC is a game-changing blend of ceramic and bio-sourced plastic.
What takes this collection into orbit is the fusion of the most innovative Swatch BIOCERAMIC material with the key OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch design elements. There’s the asymmetrical case, the iconic ‘dot over ninety’ detail on the tachymetric scaled bezel and the distinctive Speedmaster subdials.
