In the competitive world of sports, every athlete seeks out advantages that will push their game and better their performance. Omega adopted the same approach crafting its latest masterpiece, the new Seamaster Aqua Terra ‘Ultra Light’. Staying true to its name, this ingenious sports watch is designed to weigh less and provide extreme comfort during high-performance competitions. Each feature has been creatively rethought of, reworked on and revamped, resulting in an edge in watchmaking innovation. The new Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Ultra Light exists in the niche realm of high-end and experimental horology developed for athletic performance.
Developed in collaboration with Golfer and Omega ambassador Rory McIlroy, a four-time Majors champion and former world number one, the Aqua Terra Ultra Light is ostensibly created to be worn by athletes during competitions. It’s pitched as the perfect gadget to sit comfortably on the wrist without encumbering the athlete’s swing, stroke, shot, or whichever high-intensity activity they engage in.
To achieve this goal, the weight of the impressive ‘Ultra Light’ master chronometer stands only at 55g when presented along with its sporty fabric strap. The case, crown, and case back are fashioned from a specific alloy called Gamma Titanium, which is a first for Omega. This unique material, also known as titanium aluminide (TiAl), is a relatively new titanium alloy that’s prized for its hardness and corrosion-resistance even at high temperatures. Departure from the norm lies at the heart of any great innovation. Additionally, the amount of material used to create the dial has been reduced by careful research and trial. The process has further lightened the weight and heft of the watch, without affecting the visual impact of the signature horizontal fluting of the Aqua Terra range.
Showcasing water-resistance up to 150 meters consistent with the Aqua Terra family, the case also has a sleek and aerodynamic profile with a rounded crown guard design. Another first for Omega is its novelty crown, which can be stowed inside the case when not in use. It recesses into the contours of the case and pops out telescopically when pressed. This feature spells out zero disturbance to the movement of an athlete’s hands during the game and clearly improves the streamlined ergonomics of the watch.
Each ‘Ultra Light’ is presented on a dapper rubber strap, and also comes with a fabric strap for perfect comfort, whenever required. Specifically designed to prevent sun glare, Omega’s matt finished Aqua Terra makes bold use of colours such as red, green, and blue on the aluminium seconds hand, Seamaster logo, quarter-hour indexes, and the strap stitching. The impressive lightness of the latest Seamaster Aqua Terra hasn’t come at the expense of accuracy and precision. Omega presents an all-new movement, the manually wound Caliber 8928 Titanium, with Co-Axial escapement and the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) Master Chronometer certification. In addition to being highly precise and hugely amagnetic (to 15,000 gausses) this movement is also super lightweight, with its ceramic-titanium plates and bridges. In addition to providing a distinctive dark grey colour, this material also aids in reducing friction between components.
Considering Omega’s illustrious history and its world-renowned reputation for precision, the new Seamaster Aqua Terra Ultra-Light is perhaps another reminder that the brand is always striving for excellence. Focused on the future rather than the past, each Omega watch is a harbinger of that great promise.
