As a watch enthusiast, there are certain brands that you just have to know about. There are no exceptions to these names if you consider yourself a person who knows her or his way around watches. Breitling is a name that has become synonymous with pilot’s watches thanks to the age-old tool watch heritage of the Swiss watchmaker. Time, however, has changed and the Navitimer is not the only jewel in Breitling’s crown. I am talking about Breitling’s ‘Professional’ timepieces. Ever since the inaugural Aerospace launch in 1985, the watchmaker’s Professional Collection has seen dramatic growth.
Meet The New Breitling Endurance Pro
From the scrawny and rugged Aerospace to the much more feature-rich Chronospace, and of course, the state of the art Exospace, the Professional collection has truly evolved. Oh, and don’t count out the Emergency II, a watch that can literally call forth a freaking helicopter, you know, in case things go south. Given the tech-savvy as well as the durable nature of the Professional line of watches, it is only obvious that Breitling chose it for its new Endurance Pro.
First Impressions
The idea behind the new Breitling Endurance Pro is crystal clear. For ages, luxury sports watches have been limited to the stereotypical stainless steel shells and mechanical movements. To think of it, this might add to the timepiece’s face value but to its purpose, not so much. This is what fueled Breitling to create a sports watch that was made out of something much lighter than stainless steel and powered by something much tougher than a mechanical movement.
For those who do not know, the Endurance Pro is basically a successor to the Sprint timepiece that was launched way back in 1967. The watch was unique as it offered a ‘pulsometer’, a feature that allowed users to check their heart rate. Yes Apple, you were not the first one to do so. This feature finds its way back in the new Endurance Pro.
The second thing that strikes the eyes is the use of an unorthodox material for the watch. The watch witnesses the use of ‘Breitlight’, a material that was introduced in 2016. It is 5.8 times lighter than stainless steel and 3.3 times lighter than titanium. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me. This makes for an ideal choice as it suits the sporty nature of the watch.
Getting into The Details
The watch stands at 44 mm, quite decent considering modern-day dimensions. The watch case is made of Breitlight, a material that was specifically designed for such watches. As mentioned above, Breitling claims it to be lighter than both stainless steel as well as titanium. The dial is pitch black and comes along with five different colour accents. The applied Arabic numeral hour markers and the Super LumiNova contribute to the device’s superior legibility. The timepiece also flaunts a 100-meter water resistance and comes along with an option between rubber and nylon straps.
As far as the movement is concerned, the watch is powered by a Breitling Calibre 82, a high-precision, thermo-compensated, and tough Swiss SuperQuartz movement. Standing at 30 mm in width, the mechanism offers hours, minutes, seconds, date, and last but not least, a chronograph. Like all Breitling quartz movements, this one too is COSC certified.
Honest Opinion
For many, this is bound to become the best luxury sports watch out there. Although it reeks of a stench that screams classic Breitling, the watch will probably surprise a lot of people as it combines a good share of modern aesthetics as well.
In all honesty, the market segment Breitling is trying to invade is already dominated by watches like the Luminox and various versions of G-Shocks. Nonetheless, not everyone is looking for a watch to go to battle. Some people just want something that can handle a good old flogging session, and in this case, about 500 minutes of strenuous activity.
Breitling is launching the watch along with what it is calling the Breitling Endurance Pro Strava Challenge. The program encourages users of this particular watch to engage in 500 minutes of breaking a sweat. It can be cycling, running, sprinting, or swimming. Basically, anything that keeps you active and forces you to increase your heart rate. Contestants who finish the challenge will then be entered into a draw. Rumours have it that the first prize is a bicycle branded by Breitling-Colnago.
It is for sure that this timepiece will be a huge hit, especially considering the fact that it will cost less than many of the mainstream luxury sports watches in the market.
