What is the shared language between haute horology and automobiles? We drive into the details, highlighting the most iconic collaborations between the two worlds.
In the summer of 1966, the world watched with bated breath as Ford Motors took on the then reigning champion, Ferrari at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans (the world’s oldest active endurance sports car race). It was a rivalry so legendary, that it later came to be immortalised on screen in the 2019 movie, Ford vs Ferrari. Machines were pushed to their limits, drivers battled fatigue and every second was counted with almost obsessive accuracy. Behind the glamour and grit was an equally critical player: timekeeping.

In an era before digital dashboards, the chronograph was the indispensable tool measuring laps, calibrating speed and dictating strategy. When Ford finally clinched its historic victory, it was as much about mastering time as it was about mastering speed. Born of this shared legacy of precision engineering and elevated design is the partnership between horology and motorsports, where house codes and brand philosophies intertwine to create cultural artefacts that symbolise speed, status and storytelling.
A Journey through Time

The relationship between timepieces and automobiles dates back to the early 20th century. In 1903, British pioneer Alfred Dunhill patented the first automotive clock. By 1911, TAG Heuer patented the ‘Time of Trip’ the first dashboard chronograph for automobiles. But it was in 1960s, that the connection was cemented in pop culture. When American actor Steve McQueen wore the TAG Heuer Monaco on his wrist in the movie Le Mans, that iconic image tied watches to motorsports forever. Even Omega’s Speedmaster, a watch now synonymous with NASA’s Moon mission, was at its inception in 1957 as a racing chronograph. By the 2000s, these collaborations evolved from sponsorships to co-creations, such as the Breitling x Bentley partnership that seamlessly blended Breitling’s technical prowess with Bentley’s unparalleled craftsmanship. Today, these worlds intersect more deeply with shared research, co-designed movements and aesthetic cues drawn from the cars themselves. We track the ones that stand out:
TAG Heuer x Porsche

The TAG Heuer × Porsche alliance traces its roots to the 1960s, when Jack Heuer named the Carrera after the legendary Carrera Panamericana road race. Formalising their partnership in 2021, they launched the TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph with an asphalt textured dial, Porsche-inspired typography and the Carrera chronograph that symbolised their shared heritage. In 2023, they also released the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche, honouring the 60th anniversary of this union.
IWC x Mercedes-AMG

Since 2013, IWC has been the official engineering partner of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team. Much like an AMG, these watches are built with an obsessive attention to detail, incorporating materials like ceratanium—a hybrid material lighter than titanium yet tougher than steel—also found in high-performance brake discs. Engineered to withstand the vibration of a cockpit, the IWC Pilot’s Watches celebrate the mean machines they represent.
Richard Mille x Ferrari

Launched in 2021, the Richard Mille x Ferrari union is one of two titans of innovation known for their relentless pursuit of cutting-edge materials and revolutionary technology. With skeletonised movements that mimic the architecture of a supercar and materials like titanium that mirror those used in Formula 1, the RM UP-01 Ferrari measuring a mere 1.75 mm, is a masterpiece of ultra-thin watchmaking.
Breitling x Aston Martin

The newest pairing on the grid is Breitling x Aston Martin, a partnership about refinement and understated confidence. Announced in February 2026, the British-Swiss alliance made Breitling the official watch partner of Aston Martin Aramco F1. The debut piece was the Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 Aston Martin with a titanium case and carbon fibre dial, launched in a limited run of 1,959 pieces to commemorate Aston Martin’s F1 debut year.
Jacob & Co. x Bugatti

Since 2019, Jacob & Co. has turned Bugatti’s codes into one-of-a-kind horological collectibles. The Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon featuring a fully functional miniature replica of the W16 engine made of sapphire crystal, with moving pistons and crankshafts, is the ultimate conversation starter. Their jewel encrusted variants with baguette diamonds are a maximalist’s dream.
Roger Dubuis x Lamborghini

Inspired by Lamborghini’s bold design language, the Roger Dubuis x Lamborghini partnership is futuristic, edgy and disruptive. The Excalibur Spider Huracan with automatic skeleton movements, carbon fibre or gold cases and calibres built like V10 engine, mirrors the Huracan’s performance and avant-garde aesthetics. A homage to the supercar, it is a unique fusion of art, engineering and innovation.
These alliances thrive because at its core, the language of haute horology and automobiles is the same. It’s a celebration of human ingenuity, design excellence and the eternal fascination with speed. Materials are borrowed, design codes are reinterpreted and mechanics are aligned, with movements engineered to echo the rhythm of an engine. And more importantly, these collaborations appeal to the watch collector and the car enthusiast, who often is the same person—the connoisseur with a taste for craftsmanship, heritage and the finer things in life.
